This image illustrates what is and is not a group in the Puyo Puyo game.

Grid 1: two groups. Four 'A' pieces in a row and four 'A' pieces in a column, separated by a 'B' piece.

Grid 2: two groups. Four 'A' pieces in an L-shape, held up by two 'C' pieces, on one side of the board and four 'A' pieces in a square on the other side.

Grid 3: no groups. Both sides of the playfield have 3 adjacent 'A' pieces and a 4th diagonally adjacent, with some B and C to hold them up.
