The Punch Line Comedy Club[1] was first opened December 30, in 1991 in Sacramento, California. Our first show night included Dr. Gonzo, Sue Murphy[2] and Bobby Slayton[3]. This club was an expansion from the original Punch Line Comedy Club[4] in San Francisco, California, which was opened in 1978. The club was started by Bill Graham who also opened another Punch Line Comedy Club in Walnut Creek, California, which closed in 1995. All three clubs were owned an operated by Bill Graham Presents up until the tragic death of Bill Graham in 1991. The company was taken over by a group of employees who later sold it to SFX promotions. It was then sold to Clear Channel Entertainment. Eventually, Bill Graham Presents along with other independent promoters formed Live Nation[5] which is now the largest concert production/ promotion company in the world.
For over 15 years, the Punch Line Comedy Club has brought the nation’s best comics to the stage. Comics such as DL Hughley, Carlos Menica[6], Tom Rhodes[7], George Lopez[8], Chris Rock[9], Dave Attel[10], Mitch Hedberg[11], Freddy Soto[12], and Dave Chappelle[13] have all performed on the Punch Line stage. The Punch Line’s tradition and dedication to the art of comedy have earned it both Sacramento Magazine’s and Sacramento News and Review reader’s choice award for best comedy club. The club offers an intimate setting where one can enjoy the funniest entertainers live and up close, the way stand-up comedy was intended.
