PR 1 starts in Ponce, and ends in San Juan. The route connects important cities such as Caguas, Cayey and Salinas. It is divided from Caguas to San Juan in a segment known as "La Muda", which is famous in the island for its large numbers of junkers, decor shops, car dealers and motels.[citation needed]
It has several intersections with major highways such as PR 10 near Mercedita Airport in Ponce and PR 3 in Salinas and Rio Peidras. There is a short segment in Cayey where it is a divided highway. PR 1 is parallel to PR-52 throughout its entire routing.
PR 1 is not to be confused with interstate highway PRI-1, which PR 1 formerly traversed until the construction of PR-52.
