[edit] Sixth generation
[edit] Sega's Dreamcast
The Sega Dreamcast (Japanese: ドリームキャスト; code-named Dural and Katana during development) was Sega's fifth and final video game console and the successor to the Sega Saturn. An attempt to recapture the console market with a next-generation system, it was designed to supersede the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. Originally released fifteen months before the PlayStation 2 (PS2), and three years before the Nintendo GameCube and the Xbox, the Dreamcast was generally considered to be ahead of its time and was initially successful at restoring Sega's reputation in the gaming industry. However, it failed to gather enough momentum before the release of the PlayStation 2 in March 2000, and Sega decided to discontinue the Dreamcast the following year, withdrawing entirely from the console hardware business.
[edit] Sony's PlayStation 2
The PlayStation 2 (PS2) (プレイステーション2, Playstation 2?) is Sony's second video game console, the successor to the PlayStation and the predecessor to the PlayStation 3. Its development was announced in March 1999, and it was first released in Japan on 4 March 2000, in North America on 26 October 2000 and in Europe on 24 November 2000.
The PS2 is part of the sixth generation era, and has become the fastest selling gaming console in history, with over 105 million units shipped worldwide by 31 March 2006. Upon its release, the PS2 set the mark of being the fastest selling console at launch, breaking the record held previously by the Sega Dreamcast. As of November 2006, the PS2 still outsells its competition, the GameCube and Xbox.
[edit] Nintendo's GameCube
The Nintendo GameCube (ニンテンドーゲームキューブ, Nintendō GēmuKyūbu?, GCN) is Nintendo's fourth home video game console, belonging to the sixth generation era. The GameCube itself is the most compact and least expensive of the sixth generation era consoles. The GameCube was released on 14 September 2001 in Japan; 18 November 2001 in North America; 3 May 2002 in Europe; and 17 May 2002 in Australia.
[edit] Microsoft's Xbox
Xbox is a sixth generation era video game console produced by Microsoft. It was first released on 15 November 2001 in North America, 22 February 2002 in Japan, and on 14 March 2002 in Europe. It is the predecessor to Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. The Xbox was Microsoft's first independent venture into the video game console arena, after having collaborated with Sega in porting Windows CE to the Sega Dreamcast console. Notable launch titles for the console included Halo: Combat Evolved, Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding, Dead or Alive 3, Project Gotham Racing, and Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee.
