Proximity detectors are devices that use mutual capacitance between itself and a nearby human body in order to detect a person's presence.

The human body is a great capacitor (body capacitance), and the proximity detector's capacitance will increase when a human is nearby. The air acts as a dielectric.
there are many types of proximity detector. common are
(1) magnetic proximity switch (2) infrared proximity switch
