The Provinces of Sri Lanka (Sinhala: පලාත්, sing. පලාත) have existed since 1987, following several decades of increasing demand for a decentralization of the Government of Sri Lanka[1]. Prior to 1987, all administration was handled by a district-based civil service which had been in place since colonial times.
Officially[1], Sri Lanka has nine provinces, seven of which have had provincial councils from the start[1]. The provinces are listed below (capital in parentheses):
