Providence Charity Baseball

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Formed in 2005, Providence Charity Baseball, of Providence, Rhode Island, is a charity baseball league whose main goal is to "empower philanthropic young adults" through the game of baseball. Games are played at Aldo Freda Field in Providence's historic Federal Hill neighborhood. Rules are that of Major League Baseball with a few exceptions: Games are played with a cloth-covered dead ball to minimize injuries. There is a set strike zone target that the pitcher throws to, no umpires calling balls and strikes. Stealing and bunting are not allowed as there is no catcher immediately behind the plate receiving the ball from the pitcher. Charity funds are raised through team registration fees, fundraising events (gallery shows, concerts, etc. ) and cash donations. Each year the winner of the league gets to decide to which local charity funds generated throughout the season are donated. Current teams are:

  • The $Haus Dead Cats ('06, '07 Champs.)
  • The Providence Red Cox ('05 Champs.)
  • The Deathhawks
  • The Avengers
  • The Fighting Statesmen
  • Wild Colonial

Stimbot of the Deathhawks only took the bat off his shoulder three times during the entire 2007 season.
