Proton Proton is a three-piece band from Brooklyn, NY. The band is known for their visceral live shows, featuring complex rock songs that display experimental tendencies while delivering memorable hooks. The Pixies, King Crimson, Deerhoof, and Gang of Four have all been used when describing Proton Proton’s sound, though none these influences can be mentioned in isolation; the trio is rapidly forging their own musical path.
Formed in early 2005, Proton Proton consists of Paul Fuster (voice, toyagalactic piano, 4-string guitar), Jarrod Ruby (drums) and Aron Sanchez (gass). Sanchez provides one of the more distinctive aspects of the band’s sound: his “gass” is a homemade bass/guitar hybrid. Using a combination of pickups, string gauges, output channels and pedals, Sanchez is able to draw from a large sonic palette. Ruby’s drumming is heavily influenced by Neil Peart, Bill Bruford and Jimmy Chamberlin. Fuster punctuates the material with various instruments. His lyrics are notable for their primal imagery and improvised feel.
