Project Mimesis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Project Mimesis is a content distribution application created by Ramzi, AngryCamel and CLuis that runs on a modified Xbox games console. Similar to the official Xbox Live service, Mimesis allows users to download and install modded game content, such as maps and models, from several download servers.

Mimesis is an unofficial project, and its use is not recommended in conjunction with Xbox Live. It is written entirely in C++ and built with the Microsoft Xbox Development Kit. The project's mascot is an orange and green praying mantis.

The Mimesis development team has recently released the latest version, dubbed "Mimesis v3" which gives users access to new features and vastly improves in terms of design and new features. Further details are provided on their website (As listed at the bottom of the page).

[edit] Supported games

The current games supported by Mimesis are:

A Lite version of Mimesis is also available which coincided with the release of Mimesis v3. The Lite version of Mimesis boots off unmodified or "virgin" xboxes through booting off other Xbox games. Current boots for the Lite version of Mimesis are James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire,Splinter Cell and Mech Assault.

The homebrew content being distributed on Mimesis ranges from custom Halo 2 levels to extra force powers in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or extra gametypes and levels in Far Cry Instincts.

[edit] The Name

Not too many people seem to be able to grasp the proper pronunciation of the word Mimesis. A few of the common mispronunciations are:

  • mem·eh·sis
  • mim·eh·sis
  • mime·sis

The proper pronunciation is mi·me·sis. The term comes from Latin and means to copy or replicate. This is a reference to the project's goal of replicating the quality and ease of use of the Xbox Live service's distribution of downloadable content. As a result, the original orange and green color scheme and mascot were born as well, with their colors capable of subconsciously connecting the project with the quality of the Xbox Live service.
