Progress Energy Inc

Progress Energy, Inc. (NYSE: PGN) is an energy company based in Raleigh, North Carolina, formed in 2000 from the merger of Carolina Power & Light and Florida Progress Corporation. It sells power and energy-related products to electric and gas customers in the Southeast of the United States. The company's most recent chairman and CEO was Mr. Bob McGehee. However, he died on October 9, 2007 at the age of 64 of a stroke.
Progress Energy is the majority owner and operator of the Brunswick, Crystal River 3, Robinson, and Shearon Harris nuclear power plants.
The company's current slogan is, "People, performance, excellence."

Progress Energy owns the naming rights to the University of Central Florida's Progress Energy Welcome Center.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have identified Progress Energy as the 29th-largest corporate producer of air pollution in the United States, releasing roughly 39 million pounds of toxic chemicals annually into the air. Major pollutants included nickel compounds, chromium compounds, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid[1]. Progress has also been named a potentially responsible party at the Carolina Transformer Co. Superfund toxic waste site, according to the Center for Public Integrity.[2]
