[edit] Professor Medhat and the New Engineering Foundation
In 2004, Sa'ad and Michelle Medhat established the [New Engineering Foundation (NEF)]. The Foundation provides bursaries to lecturers in colleges of further education to take up temporary secondments in local businesses and boost their current knowledge and expertise. It also conducts research into and analysis of the public policy solutions for promoting vocational education.
Most recently, the NEF has partnered with the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills to run focus groups and identify policies for improving Knowledge and Technology Exchange between businesses and the further education sector. The results are available in [this Foundation report].
All this work, and the NEF itself, is based upon partnerships with other relevant organisations such as [Association of Colleges], the [BBC], [Confederation of British Industry], [Institute of Directors], [Engineering Employers Federation-EEF], [Foundation Degrees Forward], [Gatsby Charitable Foundation], [Higher Education Academy -Engineering Subject Centre], [London Development Agency], [North West Development Agency], [Qualifications and Curriculum Authority], [OfSTED], [Royal Society of Chemistry], and the [Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).]
Professor Medhat is responsible for defining the strategic direction of the Foundation and creating the partnerships and the necessary funding streams to support the various initiatives.
[edit] The Engineering and Technology Board
Between 2002 and 2004, Professor Medhat was Director of Innovation, Policy and Education at the [Engineering and Technology Board (ETB)]. The ETB is a partnership between industry, government, the education community and relevant professions to promote science, engineering and technology (SET) in the UK – and especially to ensure the supply of appropriately-skilled individuals for British businesses. Professor Medhat’s role focussed on:
• Improving the existing SET curricula • Identifying areas where research, consultation and further study work needed to be undertaken to assist the ETB in meeting its key goals • Recommending ways for industry and academia to work more closely together to enable sustainable skills development and knowledge transfer. • Building partnerships with government bodies and other relevant organisations.
His tenure saw an unprecedented expansion of the Board's actvity in the fields of research, national and international benchmarking, and consultation with government.
[edit] Dubai University College (formerly Dubai Polytechnic)
Perhaps the greatest challenge that Professor Medhat has is the establishment, from scratch, of a new institute of further and higher education in Dubai.
He was the first Principal of [Dubai University College] (formerly Dubai Polytechnic), from 1997-2000. This was a collaborative venture between the[Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry] (with its 75,000 member organisations) and the UK [Department of Trade & Industry’s] joint economic committee (DUKTEC), to create a vocationally focused institution modelled on the British polytechnic philosophy and programmes.
Backed by the Chamber, Professor Medhat’s role included the creation and development of a new institution from a zero-base and the implementation and accreditation of educational programmes from foundation years through undergraduate bachelors to masters and research degrees based on the UK system.
He was responsible for establishing five Academic Schools as well as a research centre, a library, student services, and other support functions:
• Dubai Business school • School of Tourism and Hospitality Management • School of Finance and Law • School of Information Technology • School Media and Communication (including a major English as a Foreign Language Centre and foundation programmes) • Centre for Research (responsible for the MRes and other research degrees)
The polytechnic, and Medhat himself, received substantial recognition, such as the [British-American Council Award], [German Council Award], and the [IT Person of the Year Award].
