Proclamation of Rebellion

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Proclamation of Rebellion, officially titled A Proclamation for Suppressing Rebellion and Sedition, was the response of George III of the United Kingdom to the news of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Issued August 23, it declared elements of the American colonies in a state of "open and avowed rebellion". It further addressed the colonists and colonial officials, ordering them "to use their utmost endeavours to withstand and suppress such rebellion". The Continental Congress issued a response on December 6 dismissing the Proclamation and challenging the King's right to expect their allegiance.
