In many countries, and even for a big number of intellectuals or politician from leftist and rightist nationalism, this term has a clear pejorative intention, it could be for reject liberalism, read as implicit and constitutive of americanism, or it could be as a reaction and developments of the politics called imperialist in the American government after the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt and his Big stick Diplomacy at the end of the XIX century (Spanish-American War in 1898 and Panama independence from Colombia in 1903).
