This photomicrograph depicts the histopathology associated with protothecosis in a dog due to Prototheca zopfii. Prototheca spp. are achlorophyllic algal organisms. P. zopfii has been implicated in cutaneous infections in humans and animals, with systemic dissemination occurring in immunocompromised individuals.
