As part of the New Zealand Flag Debate, several designs have been put forward, but not many that retains links to the British Union Flag. This design (October 2007) is one of the few that do, which also incorporates a southern cross to establish New Zealand's location in the southern hemisphere, a red koru symbolising growth out of British and Māori heritage. and the New Zealand colours of black and white. The white band represents New Zealand's nickname, the 'long white cloud' and peace. The red symbolises Māori and also wartime sacrifce. The blue symboises the Pacific Ocean. [1]
