Aristotle's Early Years

Aristotle was perhaps one of the most important philosophers of all time. He was born in Stagirus in 384 BC. This was a small Greek colony and seaport on the coast of Thrace. When he was a young boy his father died, and Aristotle was given a guardian by the name of Proxenus. When Aristotle was seventeen his guardian sent him to Athens for the continuation of his education. This was considered the intellectual capitol of the world at that time. In Athens Aristole joined the Academy and studied under another great philosophiser of the time, Plato. He studied under him for twenty years. Due to the influences of Plato in his life and his time at the academy, he start to lecture himself. Aristotle especially enjoyed the topic of rhetoric. Plato died in 347, and Aristotle would have been the natural fit for the new leadership of the academy, but his derivation from Plato's teaching was to great to allow that. The job was instead given to Speusippus, Plato's nephew. Aristotle's friend Hermeas who was the ruler of Atarneus and Assos Mysia offered him to come to his court, where he stayed three years and met his married Pythias.
