Prix Gladiateur
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Prix Gladiateur is a Group 3 flat horse race in France for four-year-old and above thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 3,100 metres (approximately 1 mile 7½ furlongs) at Longchamp Racecourse in September.
It was first run in 1807 at the Champ de Mars and was originally known as the Grand Prix. The race continued at its original venue until the opening of Longchamp Racecourse in 1857. The present title was given to the race in 1869 in honour of the racehorse Gladiateur, winner of the English Triple Crown in 1865.
Initially run at 4,000 metres, the distance of the race increased to 6,000 metres in 1857 and to 6,200 metres (3 miles 7 furlongs) in 1861. This marathon was maintained until 1955, when there was a reduction to 4,800 metres, dropping back to 4,000 metres in 1977. The present distance was introduced in 1991.
