Prince Luís of Orléans-Braganza (born June 6, 1938) in Portuguese: Luís Gastão Maria José Pio de Orleans e Bragança, (anglicised: Louis Gaston Mary Joseph Pius of Orleans and Braganza) whose baptismal name is Luís Gastão Maria José Pio, is the present Head of the Vassouras Branch of the Brazilian Imperial House and, according to legitimist claims, de jure Emperor of Brazil (Luís I of Brazil). He is viewed generally as the pretender to the Brazilian Imperial and Royal throne.
He has been styled as Prince and as His Imperial and Royal Highness throughout his life. In Brazil, where the honorific "Dom" has disappeared from everyday use, he is regularly called "dom Luiz".
He was born in Mandelieu in France. Although Prince Luís was born after the exile that had been imposed to the Imperial and Royal Family by Brazil's first Republican government had been lifted, which had happened in 1922, the aftermath of World War I and World War II detained the entire family in Europe until 1945, when the Imperial and Royal Family finally returned to the country, settling in the town of Petrópolis.
Prince Luís's father was Prince Pedro Henrique of Orléans-Bragança, the previous Head of Vassouras Branch of the Imperial and Royal House, and his mother is Princess Maria of Bavaria, of the House of Wittelsbach. Prince Luiz is the great-grandson of Isabel of Brazil and great-great-grandson of Brazil's last Emperor, Pedro II.
Although with some controversy (namely the 1909 document known as the Pacte de Famille, according to which the House of Orléans-Braganza would have lost their status as royal princes of France on the occasion of their "naturalization" in Brazil), Prince Luís is also considered a royal prince of the deposed monarchies of France and Portugal, in addition to that of the Empire of Brazil.
Prince Luís currently resides in São Paulo.
