In one of the most memorable fights in the history of PRIDE, Frye defeated Takayama by TKO (Punches) (6:10 First Round). The match turned into a slugfest as both men held the opponent's head and punched each other in the face, neither one backing down or protecting himself. Takayama soon developed a huge mouse around the left eye. After some more brutal punching exchanges, Takayama landed on his back after a failed throwing attempt and was pounded on by Frye, leading to a referee stoppage. This fight received the 2002 Shoot Match of the Year Award from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
