[edit] Summary

Velázquez painted the Portrait of the Infante Felipe Próspero (1657-1661). One of Velázquez last works, it was sent at once to the imperial court in Vienna. It shows, shortly before his death, the two-year-old, in whom as the only heir to the crown all the hopes of the Spanish Habsburgs had been placed. In the traditional court portrait pose, the child rests one hand on the back of a small red velvet chair containing a dainty little dog. The sickly prince wears a white smock over his "official red gown; the smock is decorated with tiny bells and lucky amulets.
