The President of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania is the senator elected to preside over the Senate meetings. He (or she) is also the president of the Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies.

The President of the Chamber of Deputies is elected by secret ballot with the majority of votes from the Deputies. If none of the candidates obtains the necessary votes, the first two compete again, and the one with most of the votes wins.

- calls the Senate in session (ordinary or extraordinary)
- presides the Chamber of Deputies meetings
- represents the Chamber of Deputies in the relation with the President, the Chamber of Deputies, the Government, Constitutional Court
- represents the Chamber of Deputies in the foreign relations
- succeeds (ad interim) the President if the President of the Senate cannot do so. (He/she continues to be President of the Chamber of Deputies during the ad-interim presidency of the country. He/she acts as President until a new president is elected.)

Between 1858 and 1947 the lower house was called English: Assembly of Deputies (Romanian: Adunarea Deputatilor). From 1946 it was the unicameral Romanian Legislative.

The Legislative was called English: Great National Assembly (Romanian: Marea Adunare Naţională).
[edit] 1990 - present
The Legislative bicomes bicameral again, and the lower house is called English: Chamber of Deputies) (Romanian: Camera Deputaţilor), and is headed by a President.
