The style of football played, tactics and formations all changed fairly radically between about 1900 and 1920; the players listed in this category all played in a distinctly different style to those who played after about 1920, and for that reason seem to me to be usefully placed in a separate category. Plainly it is impossible to draw a line that exactly demarcates this change, but the outbreak of World War I - which resulted in the suspension of professional football in all territories outside South America - seemed the best compromise.
