[edit] Move to Prasantha Chandra Mahalanobis

A move was made by User:Shyamal and the following comment from the user talk page is placed here for reference.

He was a Bengali and Bengalis do not pronounce Prashantha, rather do it without the h: Prashanta. But CRRao was a South Indian, and a South Indian would spell it as Prasantha. I think your move of the page was not correct even though you cited the spelling used by CRRao. I would suggest moving it back to the old spelling. GDibyendu (talk) 10:48, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

I agree that these variations occur, but believe that a valid reference outweighs such conventions. As I know it the Royal Society Biographies are quite careful on such matters making sure that spellings match with certificates and publications and would prefer that it is given its due. If however there is a reliable citation for the modified spelling that suggests that the eminent biographer was incorrect I think a move should be made. Thanks. Shyamal (talk) 10:52, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Please note that has been moved from the Prasanta spelling to Prasantha (not Prashantha). Shyamal (talk) 10:55, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
CRRao is not eminent as a Biographer, he is rather eminent as a Statistician. :) GDibyendu (talk) 11:10, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Also, the other cited source in the article, which spells the name as Prasanta, is from a publisher who are not any less reliable than Royal Society: Oxford University Press. You can also consult this page from ISI Bangalore Website. You can also google on the name. Does CRRao's biography claim that the previous spelling was incorrect? Otherwise, why did you choose to move the page, even when you know such variations of spelling exists? Is it our own liking for the spelling? GDibyendu (talk) 11:28, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
I note now that there are several other sources that do list him under Prasanta. So will move him back. It has little to do with personal choice. The page lacked inline cites and when I looked up the references it did not match up. Thanks Shyamal (talk) 11:50, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
There is a corrigenda - http://www.jstor.org/pss/769652 Corrigenda: Prasantha Chandra Mahalanobis. 1893-1972 Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, Vol. 20, (Dec., 1974), pp. 505-505. I do not have access to this, but would not be surprised if this spelling is the subject ! Shyamal (talk) 12:02, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a lot man. We can spend our time and energy in addition/improvement of materials, rather than discussing over this type of minor issues. Thanks again. GDibyendu (talk) 12:14, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
