"Potters Bar is also known as 'Potty Bar' owing to its large collection of Indian restaurants." I've never heard it called this, has anyone else? [edit] Sewage system

I'm going to remove the line Our sewage system is simply fantastic unless someone can provide a citation. I can't find any reference to it and I really can't believe anyone would really say it. Bangers 07:09, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

I've lived in Potters Bar for a number of years and have never heard this story. It looks like an ex-pupil has added a dead granny —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bangers (talk • contribs)

I've heard this rumour about several schools in the area, but whilst I was in Primary School. It seems quite pervasive of many schools in fact, not limited to Mount Grace, or Potters Bar for that matter. 82.6.55.244 21:19, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

There is a small stream/brook/whatever near the golf course that goes underground about half way between the school and the station. This is where the confusion stems from. I have removed the bollocks from the main entry in light of this

[edit] Train Crash

Is "train derailment" really the right words to use? The media in general have all called it "Train Accident" or "Train Crash". Derailment makes it sound rather less serious than it was, after all the train carriage ended up on its side, and not only resting on the platform (about 0.75m above the tracks) perpendicular to the direction it was travelling (at 90mph IIRC), but actually suspended across the tracks resting on two platforms and wedged under the roof! I'd call that a crash not a derailment.

Potters Bar is the highest point above sea level in western Europe (apart from Mont Blanc).

Good move AnyFile...I couldn't resist pointing out the stupidity of the statement about height above sea level by adding the Mont Blanc reference but was going to sort it out this evening anyway. (Don't seem to have been logged in at the time, my mistake.) It probably *is* true that there is nowhere (due) East of Potters Bar in Europe which is higher, but that's hardly interesting as it applies to quite a lot of places in the UK.

What I don't know is whether the "Gateway to the North" claim is sound. It's kind of plausible but would only be said with a healthy does of British irony (and thus hardly suitable for Wikipedia)!

Another user has added the same edit about it being the highest point with a strange claim of non-existant gas works on mutton lane. At least i've never seen them there. If referring to the great north road that is actually a large ventillation shaft for the pb rail tunnel. Actually Brookmans Park is higher than Potters Bar, thats why Brookmans Park has the radio station. Govvy 10:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

John Byng as far as I knew had an estate in Potters Bar and I think the Byng family still own a lot of land in Potters Bar to this day. Does anyone else know about this? Govvy 10:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

The is also the Wyllyotts Centre which hosts a joint theatre and cinema. Events for child of plays and films. The centre even hosts sporting events such as boxing and armature wrestling.

First word should be There basicly Wyllyotts Centre is one of the main entertainment area's of Potters Bar. Has a theatre and a cinema. Has halls and such, they host boxing, armature wrestling and other sporting events. Govvy 22:26, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

I got an old replica map of Hertfordshire and Potters Bar is spelt Pottrels Bare. I am not sure how to implement it into the article, but I thought it interesting, the replica map has a date of 1471. Govvy (talk) 16:56, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

I've revised the introductory paragraph. First of all it's clearly nonsense to claim that PB remained "unchanged" for six centuries. This is a gross misreading of the PB history site cited. Secondly, I see no need to include the 2002 rail crash as a defining characteristic six years on.
