User:Postmodern Beatnik/Personal Log

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a personal log about my Wikipedia-related activities. It began on my talk page, but was moved 15 November 2007 for reasons explained below.

Contents

[edit] 22 February 2007

Temporary brain fry. Cleaning up the philosophy of time pages. Was bold. Screwed up. Hopefully all will be well by tomorrow. WikiProject Philosophy is a harsh mistress. So, too, non-halting sentences.

[edit] 24 February 2007

All is well. The Eternalism (philosophy of time) move was successful. Now for the rest of the philosophy of time pages.

[edit] 24 April 2007

For what it is worth, I officially object to the proposed merger of Act utilitarianism and Rule utilitarianism. Some of my reasons are stated at Talk:Act_utilitarianism.

[edit] 23 May 2007

A consensus seems to have been reached against the Utilitarianism page mergers. As such, I have removed the "proposed merger" tags from the appropriate pages.

[edit] 26 May 2007

I will be doubling my efforts to fix up the philosophy of time pages. They are in a very bad way right now and need careful attention. Also, a note to all those who would vandalize and otherwise slander Friedrich Nietzsche: I may not check the pages daily, but I will boldly and ruthlessly revert your edits. And I will do more than that, I will replace your slander with accurate and well-sourced information. I don't care if you don't like the man—this is an encyclopedia. If you want to ruin the man's reputation, do some honest philosophical research on him. Should you still dislike him after that, get a PhD and and give your view some credibility. It would be an amazing first.

For what it's worth, I'm neutral with respect to spoiler tags. As someone focused almost entirely on WikiProject Philosophy (where spoiler tags are a non-issue), I can only care so much. Viscerally, I am for them; but I have yet to think of formal arguments in their favor. This is not to say such arguments do not exist, just that I have not found them yet (unsurprising, given the fact I have spent virtually no time on it). In my spare moments, however, I have been exposing how lacking the arguments against them are—this being much easier than the aforementioned task. Quite frankly, those who are against spoiler tags seem to be coming up with a lot of rhetorical flourish to justify what amounts to laziness and a lack of willingness to do their jobs as Wikipedia editors. Well, that's not quite accurate. Some of them are just being elitist/conformist/reactionary. If they have good arguments hiding somewhere then good for them. Maybe I'll stumble upon one soon. But I wish policy discussions could be a little more rigorous. I'm considering writing an essay on the flaws of the anti-spoiler tag campaign, but for now I am taking a more direct approach and calling some of the arguments out. I expect a reaction any moment.

While I have had reactions to this log, and while it has proved useful in many ways, the new method for starting new sections on my talk page has proven incompatible with the way I used to maintain my talk page's format. As such, the log now gets its own subpage. I suppose this means that it will be less likely to be read and reacted to, but so it goes.
