[edit] The Portuguese class at Leto High School

The A.P. Leto High School Portuguese class was founded in 2005 by Mrs. Sparkman, a foreign language teacher at Leto who also taught Portuguese at the University of South Florida. The class which started with only a handfull of students and has since then expanded into three different classes divided into two different periods; one is the Portuguese 1 class period which is the largest and the other is the combination of Portuguese 2 and 3. They are combined into one period becuase there are only three students in Portuguese 3. This Portuguese class is the only High school Portuguese class in Hillsborough County. Never before was the Portuguese language taught to High School students even though there are over 210 million speakers throughout the world.
