[edit] Name

"Dumas nevers tells Porthos given name" -- Is there a "his" before "given"? If Porthos is not his given, and du Valon is his surname. What is Porthos? --Menchi 05:54, 23 Nov 2003 (UTC)

A pseudonym, if I recall correctly.
Mind you, the fact that his family name is "du Valon" needn't rule out "Porthos" being part of his surname; some French people have long multipart surnames, of which part is his family name, part is a reference to his birthplace, part is something he inherited from his wife, etc. Porthos himself is "du Valon de Bracieux de Pierrefonds", as it says in the article.
As to your first question: I interpret it as "...never tells the reader Porthos' given name" (or possibly "...Porthos's given name").
