Not sure so I'll go away and check my facts. But I think you'll find that Vernet's 1826 expedition was a failure, when they found that the Gaucho's couldn't use their horses in the peat bogs of the islands. The settlement did not become established till the next expedition in 1828. Justin A Kuntz 10:24, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Made a couple of edits to correct minor historical errors. Also included reference to Vernet's co-operation with the British Government.
