Portree High School is in Portree on the Isle Of Skye. The new building is scheduled to open in May 2008, after which the old school will be demolished. The headteacher is Miss C MacDonald. The school enrolls 686 pupils and employs 60 teachers. The present accommodation consists of three buildings - the main building, The Elgin Hostel and the technical block - and there are also about a dozen demountable classrooms. The main building houses the English Classes, Modern Studies, Science Classes and the Modern Languages. The Elgin Hostel contains the Art Dept, Computing Classrooms and a Tech/Graph Comm room. The Tech Block is where practical classes such as the Workshops take place, where students can work with wood and metal. It also houses the Home Economics classes, the library and the Gymnasium.
The school is claimed to deliver English Medium Education (in which subjects are taught through the medium of English) and Gaelic Medium Education (in which subjects are taught through the medium of Gaelic). In fact whilst the substantial minority of pupils entering from Gaelic Medium Primary Education receive som Gaelic Education in their first two years, there is no significant provision to Standard or Higher grade. All pupils receive a comprehensive English Medium secondary education.
In August 2006, the school received a report from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education in which a number of aspects of the school's performance were praised, while other aspects were criticised.
