[edit] Speedy deletion of UpdatePower

A tag has been placed on UpdatePower, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read our the guidelines on spam as well as the Wikipedia:Business' FAQ for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] Advertising in articles

Hello. With regards to your question on the talk page of the now deleted article referenced above, there are several points to consider in establishing articles on companies on Wikipedia.

First, such articles are governed by the notability guidelines on companies. The rule of thumb here is noting whether the company has received significant or widespread coverage in secondary sources that are reliable and independent of the company (excluding company PR releases and information solely available on the company website—these sources may be used for additional information after notability has been established by secondary sources). If the article does not assert importance or significance within its text, it may be subject to speedy deletion under WP:CSD#A7. If the article does assert importance, but does not substantiate it with secondary sourcing, it may be deleted through other processes.

Articles on companies are also subject to promotion and may, as in this case, be tagged for deletion with WP:CSD#G11. Creators of articles on companies or products should be careful to approach them neutrally. All material must be attributable. If a reliable source says a company is a leader, an article can note that. If such claims are made without secondary support, the material will be suspect and may be viewed as promotional. If an article sounds like a brochure for a company or product, it may be viewed as promotional. In this case, since most or all of the language was taken directly from the company website, it stands to reason that it would read like a brochure.

As a related point, our copyright policy forbids taking text directly from other sources and pasting it into articles. For example, this website subpage was reproduced in entirety. Unless the source article releases the material under a compatible license to GFDL, Wikipedia can only incorporate it with explicit permission. That page contains a clear copyright notice and so is not free for our use without permission from the company itself. (As I have suggested above, though, even with permission from the company we would not be likely to use such text, as it would read as promotional and can't in any case be used to verify notability.)

Just as one final note, if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends that you do not create or edit the article yourself, but instead consider proposing its creation at requested articles or at a related article or relevant WikiProject.
