[edit] A Bit About Me

I like taking pictures of flowers.
I like taking pictures of flowers.

I'm awesome. I go to college and major in History and French. I minor in political science. I love politics, sleep, eating, and talking to people. I like to write. I have too many blogs. Here's two of them:

Main Blog
Blog for Trip to France

[edit] My Politics

My politics are out of this world.

CNN would probably have a seizure trying to define me. I’m a “moderate Democrat,” a “social conservative,” a “progressive liberal,” “left-wing Democrat,” and “borderline communist.”

Some characteristics that contribute to my politics:

  • I’m Catholic. Not the French kind, either. I attend Mass on a pretty regular basis (when I’m at school, anyway). I believe in transubstantiation (sp?). I believe in everything I say in the Nicene Creed.
  • I’m Pennsylvanian. Pennsylvanians have weird, messed up politics. We have a tradition of electing “moderate Republicans” (read: pro-abortion, non-Pat Robertson-esque) and “moderate Democrats” (read: traditional religious liberals). I always put “moderate” in quotations because I hate the term but I can’t find another word to replace it. Just because a Republican gets uncomfortable about torture doesn’t make him moderate. I say “traditional religious” because that’s what it’s really about. The liberals near Scranton are not “socially conservative.” There’s nothing conservative about going to Mass every week. I say “traditional” because there’s a difference between a religioun founded 2000 years ago and a religion founded by some guy 20 years ago. I respect most all religious traditions, but I respect some more than others. I like history -> I like old religions (not just Christianity).
  • I’m not white. My parents are Haitian immigrants. They came here legally, on planes. That may be a surprise to you. The whole Republican attitude of “Keep them out of our country” doesn’t work for me.

[edit] Abortion

Everybody’s favorite topic! I believe that life begins at conception, but the soul doesn’t develop until a few weeks after. If the fetus is destroyed before the soul is developed, it’s horrible but it’s not murder. After that, it is. The womb should be a safe place.

Abortion is definitely wrong, and there is no way I am voting for a “pro-life Republican” just because he/she claims to agree with me. I am not a moral relativist. No one says “well, I personally believe rape is wrong, but other people can rape people if they want to.”

Abortion and the Supreme Court

Roe v. Wade was a reflection of the culture. America was turning pro-abortion. Nowadays, it’s more evenly divided. By passing Roe, we upset half the nation. If we overturn Roe, we upset half the nation. No progress. Abortion should be legal as long as our culture wants it to be. Yes, I believe abortion is definitely wrong, but I’m not going to come in between a woman and her doctor and her family and her priest. Are my opinions skewed and messed up? Oh yes. They’re still being developed. Advice to “pro-life” activists: start from the ground up. It should work just like the progress from Plessy v. Ferguson to Brown v. Board of Education. Change the culture and the courts will follow.

[edit] Health Care

Everyone should have it. If Costa Rica can pull it off, why can’t the United States? We already have government sponsored health care - it’s only for federal employees. It works great for congressmen. Why can’t the rest of the American public have a piece of the pie? It’s an absolute disgrace to be the “richest nation” in the world and have 11 million kids without health care. KIDS! Oy.

Ninja: Health care is awesome. So is a family-friendly government. If we had a family-friendly government, maybe less babies would be aborted and we would have happy, fortunate kids instead of aborted babies or kids living in misery.

Ninja2: Speaking of health care, Uwe Reinhart is also awesome. If the Greeks had gods for public policy, Uwe Reinhart would be God of Health Care

[edit] Me & Wikipedia

I enjoy reading overly serious Talk pages. I read them in officious voices to entertain myself at night. I also like adding minor edits to various articles, although I admit, I have caused my share of trouble sometimes ;)
