Guiana is not a separate territory but both an overseas Région and overseas department of France, with the same government institutions as areas on the French mainland.

The administrative centre is Cayenne.

France is represented by prefect Jean-Pierre Laflaquière, but the President of the general council is Pierre Désert and the President of the regional council is Antoine Karam.

The general council is composed of 19 seats; whose members are elected by popular vote to serve six-year terms.

In the general council, the Guianese Socialist Party holds 5 seats, the Walwari has 5 seats, and there are 7 independents and 2 other parties.

The regional council is composed of 31 seats; whose members are elected by popular vote to serve six-year terms.

[edit] Parliamentary Representation

Guiana elects one senator to the French Senate. Georges Othily, of the Democratic Forces, sitting with the RDSE is Senator since 1989.

Guiana also elects 2 deputies to the French National Assembly, the last elections were held in June 2007. The Walwari (left radical) has one deputy, Christiane Taubira and the PSG has one deputy, Chantal Berthelot who defeated long-time UMP incumbent Léon Bertrand.
