The specific source for this photo is Lamont Buchanan's 1951 book, The World Series and Highlights of Baseball, p.170. I uploaded it to show the foul line rope. It shows a common scene from 1917-1918, of ballplayers doing drills as if they were soldiers, as a patriotic display.
