[edit] Name ambiguous
I suggest that the name of this category should be changed to better reflect its topic. 'Polynesian flora' is too ambiguous. What about 'Flora of the Polynesian subkingdom' or 'Polynesian floral subkingdom', especially given that there is much confusion outside Polynesia about what Polynesia means, Looks like the root problem (excuse the pun) is that the subkingdom itself was poorly named to start with. It's like calling the flora of North America 'Mexican flora' or the Flora of Europe 'Maltese flora'. Kahuroa 00:05, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- How about "Oceanian flora"? Berton 00:20, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- You say it relates to the "Polynesian floral subkingdom" so I can't see how 'Oceanian' would reflect it better - for one thing, Polynesia/Melanesia/Micronesia does not equate to Oceania geographically. The category name needs to be unambiguously related to the name of its topic. What's wrong with Category:Polynesian floral subkingdom Kahuroa 05:54, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- Kahuroa, I understand your concern, the name Polynesian flora is really problematic, but which could be the alternative to name of this floristic subkingdom? I don't understand English very well (still), but floral seems that doesn't refer to the flora but flower. What is important to say it is that not always the name of the floristic areas corresponds to geopolitical units, examples: the floristic kingdom Antarctic includes areas of Argentina, Chile, New Zealand (south end), the subkingdom African flora excludes floristic kingdom of Cape (South Africa) and so on. Brummitt named this region of Pacific region, then another alternative would be Flora of the Pacific region. For more info about this topic see Floristic province, but observe that this refers to floristic "province". Berton 12:15, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'm fully aware that there is no one-to-one correspondence between floristic and geographical regions. Floral does refer to flora. Do a google search on 'floral subkingdom' - it comes up a lot, nothing wrong with it! I can't understand why you don't like 'Polynesian floral subkingdom'. It makes sense. But, 'floristic' is an alternative - 'Polynesian floristic subkingdom' is good. Kahuroa 19:40, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- From Britannica Encyclopaedia (Online):"In many respects the Pacific islands are outliers of Malesia, but each of the four main divisions within the Polynesian subkingdom—Hawaii; the remaining portion of Polynesia; Melanesia and Micronesia; and New Caledonia, with Lord Howe and Norfolk islands (Figure 1)—has a high number of endemic taxa. Hawaii has more than 40 endemic genera; Polynesia, excluding Hawaii, has almost 20; the division of Melanesia and Micronesia has 38, with 17 confined to Fiji; and New Caledonia has 135 among a total of 600 genera native to the island. Only 21 of the subkingdom's endemic genera occur in more than one of the four divisions." Thus there is anything wrong in naming Polynesian Flora. The problem is that the other two subkingdoms were also already nominated without subkingdom, and it would be non uniform. But thank you for suggestions. Berton 20:59, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
