Order: Podicipediformes Family: Podicipedidae

Grebes are small to medium-sized diving birds. They breed on fresh water, but often visit the sea whilst migrating and in winter. They have lobed toes and are excellent swimmers and divers; however, their feet are placed far back on their bodies, making them quite ungainly on land. There are 20 species worldwide, though one—the Alaotra Grebe—may now be extinct.[1] Of these, two species have been recorded in Thailand.

[edit] Introduction

This template includes text that is in use in hundreds of regional bird lists. This text has been put in template form for standardization, and to make it easier to update.

[edit] Usage

Use {{Podicipedidae list header|dialect=GB|count=# in region|region=Region name}} to create a heading for a list of birds (use "US" for American spelling). If you would like to add an addendum, you may type it in after the template. Example: {{Podicipedidae|dialect=GB|count=2|region=Thailand}} There are also several unconfirmed reports of additional species. An implemented example may be viewed at List of birds of The Gambia.

[edit] Modifying template

[edit] Dialects

If you wish to modify some of the text for a particular dialect of English, replace the text with {{#switch: {{{dialect}}}| GB = British word| US = American word| #default = British word}}. For example: {{#switch: {{{dialect}}}| GB = whilst| US = when| #default = whilst}}. The last word, "whilst" in this example, is the default in case the parameter "dialect" is not specified. It will be best to keep the default standardized to one dialect, so GB will be used (not that it matters if you specify the dialect when using the template). More dialects can be added if necessary.
