[edit] Set details
Each Pack will contain two ships, submarine or a sea monster, a rules sheet, a die, and a piece of mysterious terrain. The new promotion for this pack requires one to gather all four types of "messages in a bottle" messages of which one type comes in one pack. The promotion itself contains two submarines, the U.S.S. Mercury and the Slipstream, one crew, Thane Hartless, and Abandoned Crew, a Unique Tresaure re-print from the Crimson Coast.
[edit] New mechanics and keywords
This set adds three new keywords and a new type of terrain:
- Mercenary(Ship) Ships with this key word can belong to any fleet, but cannot dock at your home Island.
- Ex-Patriot-(Crew) Crew with this key word can be assigned to any ship, but the ship it's assigned,to gets the mercenary key word.
- Submarine- Akin to the Sea Monsters from Pirates of Davy Jones' Curse, submarines are a new type of ship that can (like traditional submarines) surface or submerge. While submerged it can use a new attack, ramming. They have 2 or 3 "masts". Hull pieces are removed when hit. Some ships in this set have the ability to shoot at submerged submarines.
- Mysterious Islands- These make it harder or easier to gain treasure. Unlike other terrain these are actual islands, instead of obstacles located between islands.
[edit] Notable Ships
Nautilus- Interestingly, while in Jules Vernes' book the Nautilus is the fastest ship out there, in this set the Nautilus is extremely slow.
USS Stephens- This 5-master, paired with the right crew, is obviously a battleship, and paired with the right crew, can pack a deadly punch to your opponent.
[edit] Notable Crew
Captain Nemo- The leader of the Mercenary forces, Captain Nemo's ability can be devastating on a ship that rarely loses boarding rolls, as his ability allows you to capture a ship's crew-and use them on the ship!
[edit] Relation to Jules Verne
The book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne is heavily represented in this set, as Captain Nemo, Ned Land and the Nautilus are all pieces in the set. The Mysterious Island is also a Verne book, and is essentially the main theme of the set (although it does not represent the characters or storyline). Also represented is the submarine Terror, which is also a submarine in one of Verne's last books, Master of the World.
[edit] Inclusion of storyline
This is the first set in the Pirates franchise to include a major storyline. Characters have conflict that makes them much more interesting.
