[edit] Birth date

I've reverted the birth date (1977) instead of 1976. IMdB uses 1976, but a lot of other internet sources give 1977. I've already (beginning of August) asked IMdB to check their birth date. Until I have a response, let leave 1977. If you have other autoritative source, please cite it here. Cate 18:55, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

I checked the birth ceritifcates at Rootsweb.com There is a Piper Lisa Perabo - born October 31, 1976. No question this is her - her mother has a Norwegian name (Ulland), the middle name matches, etc. and there are no other Piper Perabos on the site (I would sincerely doubt that there are other Piper Perabo's anywhere in the US or elsewhere). The site also lists a Texas birthplace - I think there is some big mistake with the New Jersey birthplace info - probably started in one place and got reposted all over the net.Vulturell 08:16, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vegetarianism.

I've removed the reference to her being vegetarian, and replaced it with "enjoys fishing," as, recently, on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, she stated that she fishes and eats what she catches.

Again, I'll take it off, because she eats fish. Here's your proof. [1] 65.189.210.173 22:54, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portuguese?

Her father, George William Perabo, is Portuguese

Indeed. Is there a source? Zeppocity 03:29, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, there's a source. It's called "Perabo is a Portuguese name." 65.189.210.173 22:52, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
That doesn't make him Portuguese though, it would still need a source on that. John Hayestalk 12:54, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
When promoting Imagine me and you on the Craig Ferguson show, she talked about her Portugese grandmother and her Norwegian grandmother. 130.243.172.24 19:57, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cheaper by the Dozen 3

I'm planning on removing this from her filmography. There is no sequel in the works, and even if a script is made she has no commitment to it. Mothh 21:03, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] External Links

Per wikipedia's policy on external links (I.E. it is not a place for people to have many links to their various fan sites). I have removed the fan sites and put up links to yahoo movies, which contain fan sites and are a recognized authority. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:EL#What_should_be_linked and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:EL#Links_normally_to_be_avoided for more information and an understanding of why I have removed them. If you will look on other celebrity pages (ex: Jessica Alba) they do not have a load of fan sites in their external links section...only imdb and yahoo and other databases and credible sources. Sorry, but you cannot use wikipedia to increase your web site traffic. --Scotsworth 19:33, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

  • How can you truely determine what is a fan site and what is not? Honestly. Is it a fansite because fans of Pipers visit it? or a fan of Piper made the site? That indeed would be the obvious. But saying that wouldn't this wiki page also constitute as a fan site? I'm positive anyone who wasn't a fan of Pipers would take the time to contribute to this wiki or visit it.
  • I can understand the fact you wouldn't want just people spaming the external links just to gain hits. example some of the sites that have lots of ads or are selling products and exploiting Piper's success and fan following to bring people to their sites for that purpose. To make money. And although I am not usually one to point fingers look at the imdb site for example; You visit the site it has ads and they are trying to sell you 101 different things, even Pipers email! Yet you consider that okay to be on the external link list? Plain and simple for a lack of better words "That's bullshit!"
  • Yet a sincere Piper site providing people with what they want such as a large collection of pictures and information with no ads or hidden motives you consider not worthy of being on the list and pass it over? It should be the other way around. Anyways I'm not trying to pick a fight here I just wanted to get a point across which I hope I did.

The external link policy is really for credible sources, not sites with advertising. Unfortunately, while your fan site is great and has pictures, it is not an official Piper Perabo site. Piper Perabo herself does not endorse it, and so the "authority" of the information is not worthy of an external link. If we link to your site, then to be fair, we would have to link to every Piper Perabo fan site (because one cannot say that one fan site is more credible than another...what sort of judgement would we use to determine a "linkable" piper perabo web site vs. a non-linkable one??). The idea is to keep Wikipedia from becoming a link farm and a place where people simply add their links to build traffic. I have tried to compromise by putting a yahoo movies link, which if you'll notice, has a section with several links to fan sites. If there is a specific fan site directory, it would be fine to link to that (I have seen many links to such directories on other actors/actresses Wikipedia entries). In that way, people could still find your web site. You could also try submitting it to the fan site section of her Yahoo! Movies entry: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800026808/website

While imdb and Yahoo may have ads, they are considered to be "authorities" because of where they come from (a company like Yahoo, for example, is very well known and respected). I'm removing the link again, because, once again, if we have one fan site, then we have to allow all fan sites. Hopefully we can find a link to a Piper Perabo directory with a bunch of fan sites and therefore get a good solution. You will still get the traffic you want, and Wikipedia's standards are upheld.

Actually, I was searching for a more comprehensive explanation on why Wikipedia doesn't link to fansites and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Brian_Kendig/Fansite_links . Please read it, one of the best points is the fact that we cannot determine what makes a "good" and "linkable" fan site. Also, note the competition that can arise from people wanting their fan site to be listed first (I.E. when I first looked at this article, there were several fan sites all wanting top position). Then, notice how many, many people put their fan sites on Wikipedia just to increase traffic, not because their fan site is an oasis of knowledge on the particular famous person. Like I said, hopefully we can find a quality directory with your link in it to put in the external links. Until then, I will have to keep removing it because there will never be a way to prove why your site ought to be linked to above all other Piper Perabo fansites. Cheers. --Scotsworth 17:28, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

  • I read in full and do understand the points and references being made, but the whole thing still doesn't sit well with me. Then again who am I? I'm not some big corporate power house like yahoo so I have no crediblity and I'm definitly not the money wagon like imdb trying to squeeze every nickle and dime out of their visiters. I'm just a guy who watched a Piper movie thought she was a wonderful actress and decided to do a little net search on her for some additional information. I came across this wiki which I thought to myself was a great source but lacked the few extras I wanted. So ofcourse searched a little more and found many sites but all (bringing me back to my inital point) trying to sell my one thing or another. So I thought wouldn't it be nice to make a site that was for the love of the actress and not for a buck. Where others could come and visit and share in the experince, instead of being bombarded with obvious money making machines, (*plays sad violin music*) one that could be and extension of that great wiki I saw adding the few extras I wanted and was positive others did aswell. Then I said to myself, "I know! I will create such a site!" I was never so concerned about just getting hits for my site, if that was the case I would of done just as you stated above and placed my link in fansite directories and web rings. I specifically made the site for the purpose of being an extension of this wiki, and ofcourse reasons stated above. And although it is not my own vanity thinking I have the best piper site ever( although I do take pride in it), that pisses me off about my link being removed, it is the fact I spent countless hours on it only to find out in the end one of the main reasons I made it for was.. well pointless. But in the end who really cares right? It is all trivial. Life will go on as will my site.

Keep up the good work on the wiki and thanks for taking the time to respond above. Yours Truely, Admin of the [site url I'm not permited to post.]

  • After having read through this as a disinterested party (one not affiliated with any Piper fan site), my feelings are (1) The "WP:EL" page does not substantiate the argument that fan sites should not be listed. The Brian Kendig page does largely do this, but by its own admission it is currently only the opinion of its author. Although Scotsworth makes several good points, I am reluctant to buy into the idea of anyone removing material based soley on their personal opinion of what should and should not be allowed. (It would seem this has the potential to create Wiki-wars that are more protracted than those involving who has the best fan site.) Rather, if Scotsworth feels that pointers to fan sites are inappropriate, he should use this page as an example to craft official Wikipedia policy and then, if successful, (and only then) he is free to redact. (2) Is the "Admin" above being facetious, or is the pointing to fan sites even here considered a no-no? Surely it should be permissible to provide a URL in the discussion section so that those of us reading and commenting may know what is being talked about.
