In the fictional Robotech universe, the Pioneer Expedition was a mission to confront alien forces in space to prevent interplanetary war on Earth. It took place concurrently with the 2nd and 3rd Robotech wars. The expedition was led by the SDF-3 which was launched in 2022 in search of the Robotech Masters and became preoccupied with the liberation of worlds under the control of the Invid Regent. In 2031, the Invid under the control of the Regess took control of the Earth. From 2038 to 2044, the expedition sent large scale forces back to Earth to retake the planet, succeeding only with the third attempt in 2044.

The events of the expedition were supposed to be covered over 65 episodes of Robotech II: The Sentinels, but only 3 episodes that comprised the pilot were completed. The story concludes before the launch of the unfinished SDF-3.

Eternity Comics and Academy Comics published a comics series titled Robotech II: The Sentinels that covered this period of the Robotech wars. Drawn and later written by the Waltrip brothers, the series was cancelled when four fifths complete. Antarctic Press attempted a continuation with The Sentinels: Rubicon, but the story bore no resemblance to previously published material and was cancelled after two issues. The Waltrips returned to write a retconned conclusion to the series with Robotech: Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles from Wildstorm

Del Rey Books published five Robotech novelizations as part of its "Sentinels" series by author Jack McKinney.

The Robotech RPG by Palladium Books included a Sentinels book and a REF Field Guide supplement.
