Antonello - Pibiones by Antonello
My interest in fashion, retail and product development, dates back to my economics degree in Italy, where I begun to concentrate the research for my dissertation on fashion. This led logically to pursue a career in Retail and Production for the Fashion Industry. When studying for a BA in Product Development at the London College of Fashion, I had the opportunity to be exposed to the full range of fashion and retail courses, all of which tended to reinforce and focus my intense interest in fashion. I also had the opportunity to work with leading fashion and retail companies (Esprit, Prada, Bella Freud, Paul Smith, Mulberry, Hackett, and Fendi) which provided me with a new and different perspective on the world of fashion.
Recently, I developed a range of luxury handbags with Sardinian handwoven fabrics [1]Pibiones by Antonello creating new meanings and usages for traditional Sardinian textiles. My personal story and attachment to my native Sardina are made explicit and integral to the handbags I designs. This interest is reinforced by a desire to preserve as well as advance craft skills that are at risk of disappearing due to globalisation & mass-produced designs. The collections reflect the Sardinian healthy life style. The elemental forces of the sun, emerald green transparent sea and unspoiled white sandy beaches, the colours and the intense perfume of Mediterranean wild plants.
I have become even more aware on the environmental issues, as a fashion designer, my approach to fashion has evolved into designing eco conscious accessories. This of course includes the careful selection of materials and production processes. The decision to experiment with Sardinian hand-woven fabrics (produced in ethically managed factories) resulted in an exclusive 'luxury eco' line of accessories that uses sustainable yarns made from Sardinia n wools. The fabrics are produced in Sardinian villages and the bags are handcrafted by expert Italian handbags manufacturers - the main fibres used are linen, cotton and Sardinian sheep wool. I have sought to bring these aspects together so that the riches of Sardinian tradition can now be offered to all.
