[edit] Piano Rock or Piano Pop - Is there a difference between them?

I think the distinction is rather fine if there is one, and so it may not be worth splitting into two seperate genres. Thoughts? (Westius 03:29, 24 November 2005 (UTC))

It seems to me that Piano Rock is music with rock n roll rhythms and style, where as Piano Pop is just any pop song where the accompliment is piano.

for instance Just the way you are: -billy joel would be piano pop. Saturday nights aright for fighting; elton john, would be piano rock. Anything that sounds vaguely like the rolling stones but has piano in it could be piano rock.

[edit] The Start of Piano Rock

In fleshing out this article, it would be good to note a development of the genre. When do you think it started as a genre on its own? (Westius 03:29, 24 November 2005 (UTC))

[edit] Awards

Which awards are notable to include here? I think only major national awards like ARIAs, Grammys, Junos, etc. Not sure the Triple J list should stay, but it's interesting so here for now (Westius 03:29, 24 November 2005 (UTC))

Also how far back should the "recent" awards go? The Whitlams - No Aphrodisiac took the ARIA award for Song of the Year in 1998 - is this too far back to include? --ThePianoMan 00:10, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Artists

Just on a different note, does James Blunt count as Piano Pop/Rock? I would have thought so, but seeking some opinions first. Nikevs 21:51, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm new to this site--so not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, but...I'm surprised this article doesn't mention Little Richard. I think he was just as much, if not more a pioneer of the rock 'n roll piano style as Jerry Lee Lewis; I'm pretty sure he may have even come first, although you might want to double check this.

Fats Domino? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.202.152.153 (talk) 09:03, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Yeah good idea and worth checking out - I'll do hunting myself and hopefully we can flesh out this page as its a bit short at the moment. (Westius 01:03, 8 February 2006 (UTC))

The White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan could be regarded as piano rock, as that album is dominated by Jack White's piano playing, unlike their previous guitar oriented releases.

hey...where the flying f are the zombies

Does Marc Cohn deserve mention? See popular singles "Walking in Memphis" and "True Companion". [I have taken the liberty of creating this section and moving some items here. I preserved the order in which they appeared on the page. -- vltava, chopin_nh@yahoo.com, 26 Oct 2006]

  • In terms of rock music history, Rocket 88 by Ike Turner is generally considered to be the first rock song, and Ike Turner plays piano on it. The article notes that Turner's piano intro was later lifted by Little Richard. --Larrybob 01:37, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Why isn't Queen/Freddie Mercury in the main page. He/The group does have numerous songs in which the piano plays the lead. Or am I missing something?
  • Did someone delete Evanescence from the list? I cannot find it.

[edit] List of piano rockers

This page is starting to turn into a list of everyone's favourite artists. I think we should perhaps start a new page to list all the artists and leave this one for history of the style and recent award winners. What do people think? (Westius 07:51, 16 April 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Sonic description is very lacking

Reading the article, one could pass off any classical baroque, ragtime, power metal genres into piano rock. Something needs to be said about, yes the history which is too much about recent bands, but also about what particular section of music this piano rock covers.

We could say they display a piano styling with progression of accented chords likening it to rock, rather than by classical chord tone ideas and counterpoints. I could go on, the guitars are not as loud for rythm parts, but it can feature lots of lead work in basic form (simply for melodic contrast).

If someone more into those bands and musically knowledgeable can help with this part it would greatly enhance the idea of the genre's barrier. Defining aspects of the piano pop could later be set down too.

[edit] Clean Up

I just went through the entire list and removed a ton of artists. I actually checked and listened to sample of nearly every artist.

I also added fact tags and plan on eventually removing a lot unsourced POV statements.

Another major problem I have. To me Piano Rock is very clear artist who play rock and roll music on a piano, for example Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Billy Joel, Elton John, Ben Folds. I'm not sure someone like Tori Amos should be included, also is Queen really Piano Rock?

Also the basic description that lists other instruments, I really think that is wrong. Under the current description everyone from The Doors to The Rentals would piano rock and they are clearly not.

I'm putting this here for feedback before I do a rewrite, if no one replies here I plan on redoing about 90% of this article. Ridernyc (talk) 21:37, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

--- Yeah I tend to agree. I also think the list of artists should be on a separate page. I would be OK with Tori Amos, but not Queen. I think you should have a go at the re-write and see what people think. (Westius (talk) 13:06, 9 May 2008 (UTC))

[edit] Prod

I deprodded this because I feel the article deserves a deletion discussion. Feel free to AFD it. --UsaSatsui (talk) 08:55, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

I just have to say I see no reason why this page should even exist, much less why AfD is more suitable than a proposed deletion. WesleyDodds (talk) 11:33, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
