Do you have an example of a phylum that isn't a language family? In my experience, the term phylum is used interchangeably with language family. — mark 08:28, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

The definition is from David Crystal's Penguin Dictionary of Language, so I can't really argue for or against it. Maybe it does have a technically strict definition, but that it's not strictly followed.
