[edit] History

The InterContinental Phoenicia was first built in 1953 by the Lebanese businessman Najib Salha who founded La Société des Grands Hotels du Liban. Designed by the American architect Edward Durell Stone, it had a European furnishing touch yet with a Middle Eastern influence, especially in its high ceilings, sweeping staircases and palatial pillars.[2] Construction took 8 years and finished on December 1961. It had 600 rooms and suites, shops, a wide choice of restaurants and a swimming pool with a bar and a view over the Mediterranean.[3]

With the beginning of the Lebanese Civil War and over a decade of violence and instability, the hotel was forced to close. However, Mazen and Marwan Salha, chairman and member of the board of directors of La Société des Grands Hotels du Liban respectively, decided to rebuild the hotel. In March, 2000 it went through a big restoration project to meet with the modern standards of the hotel trade industry and regain its number one position in the region.
