[edit] more on phil pearlman
During the early to mid-'60s, Phil Pearlman was a regular in the Newport Beach beatnik clubs -- Prison of Socrates (Main Street, Balboa) and Sid's Blue Beet (next to the Newport Pier).
Pearlman's band Phil & the Flakes were actually the houseband for a while at the Blue Beet, a place which has a storied history itself. Phil was also featured in the Balweek 1966 book by Jerry Nikas, co-owner of the Prison of Socrates. Jerry, along with his brothers Ted and George Nikas, also owned Fink Records, which released the 1965 Phil & the Flakes single, "Blower Scoop" b/w "Chrome Reversed Rails."
