Phillip Cook

Phillip Cook (July 31, 1817 - May 21, 1894) was a general in the army of the Confederate States of America and US Representative.
July 31, 1817 saw his birth in Twiggs County, Georgia. His parents had moved from Virginia to Georgia.
He served with the United States Army in the Seminole Wars. Once the American Civil War started he sided with the Confederate States of America.
He started off as a private with the 4th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. At the end of the Seven Days Campaign Cook had advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He also fought in Second Bull Run, Antietam, the Second Battle of Fredricksburg and the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was wounded in the leg. For a short time he took a leave of absence to serve in the Georgia Legislature. At Cold Harbor he took over the brigade when Brigadier General George P. Doles was killed.
Cook was also wounded at the Siege of Petersburg. He fought under Major General Stephen D. Ramseur at the Battle of Cedar Creek. He was wounded a third time during the 1865 attack on Fort Stedman.
From 1873-1883 Cook served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Georgia. He represented part of southwest Georgia.
He died in Atlanta, Georgia on May 21, 1894.
