Graduated in Medicine from Medical College, Trivandrum and holds MD in Psychiatry from the National Institute of Mental Health And Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), the premier Institute for Neurosciences in India. Dr. Philip John is a Senior Consultant in Psychiatry in Kerala, India for over 28 years.

He has regularly presented papers in National and International Conferences. He has edited a Reference Book in Psychiatry, and authored chapters on Child Psychiatric Disorders in two Pediatric Reference Books. He has co-authored the chapter on 'Depression in the Elderly' edited by Dr. D. Rosenblatt of the Dept. of Geriatrics, University of Michigan, USA. The chapter on 'Psychological Co-morbidity in LD' in a Reference book published by Sage Publications, UK, was written by him. He is the author of ' Dyslexia in India' in The International Book of Dyslexia: A Guide to Practice and Resources by John Wiley and Sons, New York.

He is a Resource Person and Faculty at various National and International Conferences as well as for several Workshops, Seminars and CMEs. He is frequently interviewed by the media in India and abroad on professional topics. An erudite speaker, he is extensively travelled all across the world.

The Visakha Oration Award instituted by the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS- SZ) for outstanding contribution to Psychiatry has been bestowed on Dr. Philip John, MD.

Dr. Philip John set up and headed the Department of Psychiatry at the then largest Private Referral Hospital in the State for ten years. Subsequently pioneered the shift of Psychiatry into Mainstream Medicine in Kerala, to make it a popular policlinic outpatient open office practice system at PEEJAYS Policlinic, Kochi , Kerala.

The Child Psychiatry division, PEEJAYS Child Guidance Clinic (CGC) was started as a Multidisciplinary Guidance Centre for children with Learning and Behavior difficulties.

Dr. Philip John, MD serves as an expert for the CBSE, New Delhi. Associated with the World Health Organisation (WHO), India Country Office. He has held several positions in various Professional Organisations. He is a fellow of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) and member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at Cochin for two successive years, Chairman of the State HIV/AIDS Committee, Founder Trustee of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Blood Bank at Cochin, Founder Trustee of the Society for Organ Retrieval and Transplant (SORT) in Kochi, Expert for the Amendment Committee of Persons with Disabilities Act, Government of India, etc., at varying tenures.

In clinical practice, his areas of interest are Neuropsychiatry and Learning & Behaviour Disorders in Children.
