Phil Dunn
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Phil Dunn was one of the leading UK naval wargamers of the 1960s and was the founder of the Naval Wargames Society (NWS). He is also the author of "Sea Battle Games" (published by MAP in 1970 - ISBN 0853440425), one of only a handful of books devoted to naval wargaming. Phil's interest in naval wargaming slipped in the 1980s but was rekindled in the early 1990s. After publishing an article on a hypothetical 1914 version of the Battle of Jutland in Miniature Wargames (and the subsequent staging of the battle at a village hall in Mortimer, Berkshire), Phil founded the "Battleship Club", an organisation similar to the Naval Wargames Society (the NWS was still running but was less active than in its heyday). Phil edited the Battleship Club newsletter "All Guns Blazing". The Battleship Club and NWS merged in 1997 (some would say the Battleship Club absorbed the NWS, as former Battleship Club members assumed all the major committee posts) leading to a revitalisation of the hobby in the UK. Phil continued to edit the newsletter for some time before moving once again into wargaming semi-retirement in Folkestone, Kent.
As well as wargaming Phil is a keen aviation enthusiast (having built his own aircraft) and was a noted contributor to post war British boys comics.
