Phil Giles, a Detroit hotelier, opened the Flamingo Club in the African American resort town of Idlewild, Michigan in the 1940s. Famous acts such as Della Reese, Al Hibbler, Bill Doggett, Jackie Wilson, T-Bone Walker, George Kirby, The Four Tops, Roy Hamilton, and Brook Benton entertained thousands of Idlewilders throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. Shown here boarded up in the 1980s. The building still stands on Idlewild Island overlooking the lake.
