Phénix (French for phoenix in all the meanings) is a small-scale (233 MWe) prototype fast breeder reactor in France, located in the Marcoule nuclear site. It has continued operating after the closure of the subsequent full-scale prototype Superphénix. As of 2004 its main use was investigation of transmutation of nuclear waste, although it does also continue to generate electric power.
Construction of Phénix began in November 1968, first grid connection was December 1973, and expected shutdown is July 2014.
