Peyote Cactus

Peyote, Lophophora williamsii. also known as Mescal buttons is a spineless cactus. It is found in the southwestern United States including southwestern Texas into central Mexico. It is also found it the Chihuahuan desert. Peyote grows in those areas especially where limestone is in the soil. It has small pink flowers that bloom from March to May and has bloomed as late as September. It is used as a recreational drug for it's psychoactive properties. Indigenious American peoples have used it for religious purposes for thousands of years.
