Peter Smedley is the current CEO of Colonial Mutual and former Executive Director of Shell Australia.

He has served as a Director with the Australian Mining Industry Council, the Australian Mining Industrial Research Association, the Institute of Petroleum, Lloyds Register of Shipping, the Alumina Development Council and the Life Insurance Federation of Australia. He is currently Deputy Chairman of Newcrest Mining and a Director of the Business/Higher Education Roundtable and the Christian Brothers Foundation for Charitable Works. Mr Smedley is a Councillor for the Business Council of Australia, the Business Council of the National Gallery of Victoria and the President's Council of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

In May 2007, Mr Smedley was implicated in a court case in the Melbourne Magistrate's Court. The Herald Sun newspaper reported Peter Smedley stepped in to protect his son's ex-fiancee from an assault by the millionaire businessman's son Nicholas Smedley. Mr Smedley and his wife, Christine, witnessed two assaults by their son who pleaded guilty to the December 2005 attacks. Nicholas Smedley was fined $750 and put on a 12-month good behaviour bond. He pleaded guilty to two assault charges and one of criminal damage.
